Moving Homes? A Brief Guide to the Cheapest Way to Transport All your Items

Moving house can be an intensively stressful process: you have to find your dream home, fork out for the security or mortgage deposit, and then it comes to the actual process of physically moving all your things from your old home to your new one. No wonder people can call it the most stressful thing you can go through. The last thing you want to do is to have to pay for all that stress. The right moving service will vary for different people based on your individual circumstances – how much you have to transport and where you are moving to. Let this be a brief guide on how to save as much money as possible when hiring a transporting service. First off, assess how many items you have to move. You don’t need to know the exact volume of all your worldly belongings, but you will need a rough estimate. You will need to know this simply because you’ll need to know what size vehicle you require to transport all your items. Removal companies will often provide 7.5 tonne vans, and you’ll be hard pressed to not fit all your items in them in one go. Man and Van services, however, will usually provide 3.5 tonne vans – the size of an average Transit van. If you can’t envisage in your mind’s eye whether all your things will warrant a 3.5 or 7.5 tonne vehicle, then you could do a quick estimate of the volume by measuring all your items. The equation for volume is height x width x depth. Again, this doesn’t need to be exact, but it will give you a rough estimate. If you are still unsure, then you could phone up removal or Man with Van companies, they’ll be more than happy to help you decide what size vehicle you need. Next, you’ll need a rough estimate of how long it will take you to load up the van, drive it to your new home, and then unload everything. The amount of time that this will take will be a large factor in deciding which service you use. If, for example, moving into your brand new home will only take a couple of hours, then the best and cheapest service for you is a Man and Van service. As they charge by the hour, they are primarily used for local moves. With rates starting at £15 an hour, if it takes only two hours to move, then all your transport needs will cost you a mere £30. If, however, you are moving somewhere far away, which will take 5-6 hours or more, then don’t use a Man with a Van service. It will cost you dearly. A much more suitable service for non-local moves is the services of vehicle self-drive hire or removal companies. Vehicle self-drive companies will charge per day, and for a 3.5 tonne van you’re looking at around £45-60. For a 7.5 tonne van it will be considerably more expensive than that. These services are best if you don’t need any help with the lifting and moving of all your things. If you have friends or family to help you, then this could be the answer for you. Needless to say, you’ll need a driving license. If, however, you don’t have friends or family to help you move, then it is advisable to go with a professional removal company. Not only will they transport all your things, they will physically move all your possessions from your house into the van, and then out of the van and into your house. What you do now is, of course, up to you.
